It rains a lot in Portland. During the winter, while most of the country was enduring subfreezing temperatures and incessant snowstorms, we had a normal winter; one short snow storm and lots of rain. We don’t do a lot of snow days in the Pacific Northwest. We look with envy at times when the world shuts down so people can play in the snow (and yes, we did get one of those breaks this past winter). We get far too few of our quota of spontaneous days off.

Sun-DayI propose that we declare today a sun-day in the Pacific Northwest to right this Temperate Zone inequity. Given its rarity at this time of year, with a temperature above 70 and clear skies, we should simply shut down, declare a sun-day, and play in the sun all day. And whether it catches on in the larger community, or begins as adult hooky, today in the Pacific Northwest would be a good time to begin.
